Welcome back to my coffee table. I hope you have had a wonderful 2 weeks since our last visit.
We are going to continue with our study of “light”. I continue to be fascinated with the way the Lord has given us instructions through the Word left to us by Holy men of old. He has woven the great plan of the ages throughout His Word and, as one of our Bible Teachers from many years ago used to say, it is more up to date than todays newspaper.
I find it interesting that, when I am nudged by the Holy Spirit to study a subject I find a variety of times and places that the Lord sets little tidbits of information before me. Each of those bits of information seem to be woven into a tapestry of wisdom, knowledge, and understanding to help me “sense” what He wants me to know. It is not always through studying the Word of God but in being aware of everything around us that is pointing the way to Him.
Isaiah 28: 9,10 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10 For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
So now, let’s explore some things and add to our knowledge and gain more understanding for both ourselves and others.
Can you “sense” the light? If so, how? (This is not just a question I am asking hypothetically….I would love to have your comments at the end of this blog on that question.) I find myself singing many songs that talk about light. Light is a big deal.
I don’t know about you, but I am hearing a lot of things from a variety of sources about light. I have the distinct impression that the Lord wants His people to understand light.
Just in the natural, as a slightly older person than some, I find that I need more natural light to allow me to do the things I want with less effort. There is something about natural light..oh, yes, we can turn on a light switch and have instant light, but it is not the same. Just a little light is not good enough for me to have clear visibility. I need bright light. I have stumbled over things at night because I have night blindness. It takes a long time for my eyes to focus and reveal anything. One of the other things I notice is that when I am outside in the bright sunshine when I come in I can not see. My glasses have a light blocker in the lenses to help me see when I am outside. Whatever it is they put in the lenses has been specifically created to shut too much light out and it becomes very dark and then the color slowly fades when I come in the house and again my eyes work to focus in that environment.
Please bear with me as I try to lead us into the crux of this study regarding darkness and light. Darkness seeps in and encompasses everything around us slowly. Light, no matter how dim, immediately dispels the intensity of the darkness and becomes a constant bright spot in the darkness. This is so important for God’s people to get ahold of. No matter how insignificant you may feel you or your testimony of His love in your life may be, it could be the only light many people ever see.
One of my friends, told me that there are 30,000 people a day being added to the underground church in China. My heart was filled with such excitement and joy to hear this as my mind went back several years remembering that our son Rick, with the agreement of his wife Bekah, went on a mission trip to China. It was a Covert mission of smuggling Bibles into the country to the underground church. My friends immediate statement when I told her that was…seeds! Yes, they are harvesting the seeds. Each one of those seeds were filled with the light of God.
This scripture reference sure seems appropriate to the news about China and in light of what we are studying. (light) 🙂
Psalms 34:1-5 KJV
1 I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2 My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O magnify the Lord with me,and let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5 They looked unto him, and were lightened:
Strongs H5102…1) to shine, beam, light, burn 2)(Qal) to beam, be radiant
Think about verses 4 and 5 in the Psalm we just read and put yourself in the place of the author — I sought the Lord, He heard, delivered and I looked to Him and became “enlightened.”
Heb. 10:32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;
illuminated: Strongs G5461
1) to give light, to shine
2) to enlighten, light up, illumine
3) to bring to light, render evident
a) to cause something to exist and thus come to light and become clear to all
4) to enlighten, spiritually, imbue with saving knowledge
a) to instruct, to inform, teach
- to give understanding to
We have only seen 2 scriptures of the many that are in His Word that reveal who and what we are. We are light, a beam, radiant, enlightened illuminated, and on and on and on.
As we leave our study for a while consider this quote from the writings of Matthew Henry:
When we look to the world we are darkened, we are perplexed, and at a loss; but, when we look to God, from him we have the light both of direction and joy, and our way is made both plain and pleasant.
Let’s continue with some scriptures for a while, and as usual, I want to encourage you to do some more digging and bring a comment back to share with the rest of us.
This is the scripture I want to leave with you today. A wonderful picture of “The Bride of Christ”
1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
1) the sun 2) the rays of the sun 3) the light of day
Matthew Henry commented: As clothed with the sun, the imputed righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Having put on Christ, who is the Sun of righteousness, she, by her relation to Christ, is invested with honourable rights and privileges, and shines in his rays.
Until next time, be blessed!!!
