Hello again my friends. I am going to make a nice fresh cup of coffee and we will share for a while. I always have a great time studying and being a Bible detective. Mom Earlywine taught the same Bible subjects year after year and I was privileged to see her notes first hand. My, oh, my, they were so interesting. Notes and side notes and side notes of the side notes, etc. She was always so full of what she had just studied and loved to talk about it to us. It was always fresh and alive to her. I must admit I do the same thing with my notes that is why I take so many hours to put things together so you can read it. LOL
We are looking at scriptures and meanings of night, laying a foundation that will lead us to a place that will cause our hearts to cry out “here am I, Lord use me”.
I am going to list a number of scriptures regarding night. I think they are important for our study. Please go through them and ask the Lord to speak personally and quicken the information to you that you need.
But first, I did some research online about the word night, etc. Here are some of the tidbits I found interesting.
Night or nighttime is the period of time between the sunset and the sunrise when the Sun is below the horizon. This occurs after dusk. The opposite of night is day (or “daytime” to distinguish it from “day” as used for a 24-hour period). The start and end points of time of a night vary based on factors such as season, latitude, longitude and timezone.
Day and night is caused by the rotation of the Earth about its axis hence making one full rotation every 24 hour.
Different sides of the Earth are exposed to the sun during the course of these 24 hours hence at any given time the half facing the Sun will be shined upon presenting day while the other half will have no light hence will experience night.
The Earth carries two kind of motions…it revolves around the sun and rotates at its own axis at the same time.
Day and night occurs because of the rotation of Earth.
The sun shines all the time but only half of the earth faces the sun at a time. The portion which faces have day and other half has night.
When the earth rotates the part which has day has night and the night has day.
I did extensive digging to find out what time night starts and ends, etc. I got several answers depending on whether it was spiritual sources or natural. I did discover that the 4th watch was probably after 3 AM.
We will talk a bit about watch a little later in our study. There were also examples of there being more than 4 watches. This is shown clearly in scripture references.
Here is a list of scriptures regarding night for you to consider. Each one speaks something different to me. I am also going to give you the Strong’s number from both Old and New Testament
Old Testament H3915 and H 215…Night (as opposed to day), of gloom, protective shadow (fig.)
Gesenius’s Lexicon Implies obscurity, Figuratively used for calamity, misery.
Psalms 19:2…night unto night
Psalms 136:9..stars to rule by night
Psalms 139:11.even night shall be light
Isaiah 26:9…soul desired thee in night
Jonah 4:10…came up in night
New Testament G3571…Night, metaphorically–the time when work ceases, the time of death, the time for deeds of sin and shame, the time of moral stupidity and darkness, and the time when the weary and also the drunken give themselves up to slumber.
Thayer’s Lexicon from a root word meaning “to disappear”
Matt. 26:34…this night before
Luke 12:20…this night soul shall be
John 9:4….we must work the works…night cometh
Romans 13:12..night is far spent
I Thess. 5:2..as thief in the night
I am so completely overwhelmed with the thought that the Holy Spirit wants to wake us up. If we are to be watchmen, we need to watch. If I am my brothers keeper, I need to be keeping. Read some of the other blogs to get a refresher about both of those words.
1 Thess. 5:4-7
4 But you, my brothers, are not in the dark, for that day to overtake you like a thief: 5 For you are all sons of light and of the day: we are not of the night or of the dark. 6 So then, let us not take our rest as the others do let us be self- controlled and awake. 7 For those who are sleeping do so in the night; and those who are the worse for drink are so in the night;
I hear the Spirit saying “he that hath an ear, let him hear”
As I was studying today, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart with great intensity. I am used to Him doing this when He puts someone on my heart for prayer. This is a different venue, I am not able to see your face to look into your eyes and have the Spirit give me direction about or for you. But, I feel that someone who is reading this blog today,(and there may be more than one of you), whenever you are reading, whether it be as soon as it is posted or many days in the future needs to hear what the Spirit is saying to your heart. For that matter we all need to be sensitive to the prodding’s of the Holy Spirit.
But, there is someone who is wrestling with the responsibility placed on you to be watching, keeping, guarding, warning, and all that is involved with our subject.
You are weary of the watching and want a problem resolved right now. I want to encourage you that you are light to someone’s darkness. Light is stronger than darkness and when there is light there is a dissolution of the darkness. You love the Lord and are doing what you feel He is asking but you do not want to wake up.
He is waking you this very minute…Zech. 4:1 And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep,
Zech. 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Take hold of Zech. 4:6 and let the Spirit of the Lord encourage your soul and satiate you in His presence child of God and You will find rest for your soul, stir yourself and arise and put on the armor of the Living God and go stand the watch He has called you to. Rise, shine, for the Light has come and the Glory of the Lord has risen upon YOU!
We all need to consider the original words for waked in this potion of scripture
to rouse oneself, awake, awaken, incite
(Qal) to rouse oneself, awake
(Niphal) to be roused
(Polel) to stir up, rouse, incite
(Hithpolel) to be excited, be triumphant
1) to rouse, stir up
2) to act in an aroused manner, awake
to be hot, ardent; hence to be alert, watchful (in opposition both to sleep and to idleness).
to arouse, to awake, from sleep..to incite any one to any thing
Rehearse those meanings to yourself…We must be proactive. Not wait for someone to awaken us, rouse us, incite us, excite us. We must stir ourselves up.
We need to open our eyes and know the “time” we are in, see the “signs” and discern what “watch” of the “night” we are in.
So many of us need to be awakened to understand the signs in the world around us.
Oh, I know our TV’s broadcast the news they feel is important. I challenge you to begin to listen and pick out the signs of the time we are living in as they line up with the scriptures. Cain’s sins have been duplicated over and over, they have gained momentum for centuries with synergistic power, and spawned worse things than our hearts can imagine.
But, we are called to be watchmen, keepers, guards
We are our brothers keepers.
Jeremiah. 31:25-28 is a portion of scripture that we will be studying today.
It appears that the Prophet Jeremiah was having a wonderful dream…
verse 25…for I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.
satiated means soaked. Oh, how wonderful to soak in the presence of the Lord. To sit before Him and sense His presence and know that “it is well-with my soul”— replenished is kind of self explanatory. Full to the top. As if there was an empty space and something filled it completely.
Then comes verse 26: Upon this I awaked and beheld; and my sleep was sweet unto me. H 6974 1) to awake, wake up
a) (Hiphil) to awaken, arouse, show signs of waking, awake
It was a wonderful dream…He knew the Lord had spoken to Him and had the promise that His people would again be free although things were pretty bleak at that time.
verse 28…And it shall come to pass, [that] like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the Lord.
This particular verse brings great peace to me… “like as I have watched over them” He is always watching over us, in the good times and the bad times…and it is He that watches over us to restore, build and plant.
I love the scripture so much. It is an anchor to our souls. It is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.Psalms ..He know and He sees all things concerning me!
The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of Seir, Watchman, what of the night? Watchman, what of the night?
Night is:”The night is wherever there is quiet unconcern” [BENGEL].
